Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20th 1964) is an American politician and lawyer who is the 49th and current vice-president of the United States. Harris is the first female vice president and the highest-ranking female official in U.S. History, as well the first African American and second Asian American vice president. Harris is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition, she served as a United States senator representing California between 2017-2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California. She graduated from Howard University as well as the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Her professional career started in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003, she was appointed the San Francisco district attorney. She was appointed Attorney General of California in 2010 and she was re-elected in 2014. Harris was the junior member of the United States Senate from California from 2017 to 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez during the 2016 Senate elections, becoming the 2nd African American woman, and the first South Asian American, to be senator in the United States Senate. In her time as a senator, she pushed for healthcare reform, federal descheduling for cannabis, a path for immigrants who are not legal citizens and the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. Harris also backed progressive tax reform. She earned national attention for her provocative questioning of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings, which included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual assault.
